China’s “Belt and Road” is an expansive, intercontinental network of routes of trade, culture, transport, and all forms of communications. From the ancient capital of Chang’an, now Xi’an, it heads east through some of the most culturally rich parts of China, in Shaanxi, He’nan, Anhui, Shandong, Jiangsu, and beyond.

The Middle Middle Kingdom project takes a look, mostly by rail, but also by other means of transport, of China in this part. From the ancient capitals in Shaanxi and He’nan, to the rich heritage of Confucius in Shandong, to even more central/southern Chinese culture in Anhui, and the far end of the Eurasian Land Bridge at Lianyungang, a city by the East China Sea.
